Why do we clutter?

Did you know that clutter and chaos in your home not only negatively affect the organization and aesthetic of your physical space, but they also impact your mental space? This may seem obvious but there is, in fact, quite a lot of psychological research to prove this.

But as a professional organiser, I think it's far more interesting to explore the reasons why we accumulate clutter in the first place.

3 top reasons to explain 'clutter" are -

1. Attachment

People may become attached to their possessions for various reasons, such as sentimental value, fear of letting go, or a belief that they may need the items in the future. This attachment can lead to a reluctance to discard or organise items, resulting in clutter.

2. Procrastination

People may put off cleaning or organising their possessions because it can be overwhelming or time-consuming. This can lead to a build-up of clutter over time.

3. We Buy Too Much

Impulse buying or buying things we simply don't need is often the simple culprit behind our cluttered and disorganized spaces. In a consumer-driven society, it's very easy to make unnecessary purchases over and over again.

Whatever the reason, I help my clients rationalize their attachment and the value of their cluttered belongings. It's actually a very liberating process and with a bit of motivation, people are amazed at the results.

Living in an organized home is proven to help reduce stress, increase productivity, and improve one’s clarity and focus as well as sleep and overall mood. So this Spring, consider clearing your mind by clearing your space!
